Pappu Urumindi – Andhra Style

Pappu Urumindi which is a simple homemade dal that is prepared easily with chana and urad dal. In this, ingredients usage is less; however the flavors are good and contain high proteins. These all dals are toasted with spices and coconut dried with tamarind that provides it a unique taste. Let’s have a look at its ingredients and preparation.

Ingredients:

Chana dal (1/2 cup)
Urad dal (1/4 cup)
Turmeric powder (1/2 teaspoon)
Salt

To Grind

Dry red chilies (3)
Coriander seeds (1 teaspoon)
Cumin seeds (1/2 teaspoon)
Fenugreek Seeds (1/4 teaspoon)
Tamarind (5 grams)
Dry coconut (2 tablespoon)

To Temper

Mustard seeds (1 teaspoon)
Cumin seeds (1 teaspoon)
Curry leaves (1 sprig)
Cooking oil
       
How to Prepare?

To start preparing Pappu Urumindi (Andhra Style), cook urad and chana dal in a pressure cooker with some pinch of turmeric powder and salt and wait till 6 whistles. Cook it till it gets soft and mushy now you can turn off heat and release pressure naturally.

Now roast the cumin seeds, coriander seeds and fenugreeks seeds and blend it with tamarind and coconut now add some water and blend it like a paste. Now open the cooker and keep on the heat again and add the seasoning and needed salt and keep sauté until it becomes thick.

On the other hand, heat pan and pour oil, add cumin and mustard seeds wait till crackle, now sprinkle some curry leaves. Finally your Pappu Urumindi is ready to serve and make it with steamed rice, which is a perfect match.
